#25. June 12th, 2024 (Hearing): The court set a ruling date of July 18th, 2024.
Case Overview
- On January 5th, 2021, KWS officers with support from the Mara Elephant Project (MEP) arrested two men in possession of 3 tusks weighing 30 kg.
- They were arrested in Olelemia, Narok West Sub-county for dealing in and being in possession of wildlife trophy of endangered species contrary to WCMA. They were taken to Narok Court the following day.
- Appearing before Chief Magistrate George Wakahiu, the two accused pleaded not guilty and were remanded to January 11th, 2021 for bail application.
- The 3 tusks weighed 12.7 kg, 13 kg, and 4.3 kg.
- Accused were Simon Kipng’eno and Laban Sigilai
- Investigators believed the ivory came from Tanzania

#24 .March 13th, 2024 (Hearing): Today’s hearing did not take place as the court was not sitting. A Hearing date has been set on June 12th, 2024. (This was the first attendance of SEEJ-AFRICA)

MARA ELEPHANT PROJECT: MEP’s intelligence unit started 2021 off with two ivory busts. Starting on January 5, MEP’s intelligence unit alongside Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) arrested two suspects in possession of 30 kg of ivory. The team suspects this ivory came from Tanzania and are glad they were able to successfully remove it from the market.
