#12. August 29th, 2024 (Hearing): 

Case Overview

On March 12th, 2024  at 2100 hrs, at Uathimo Bar and restaurant in Makindu, in Makueni county, the accused were found dealing in trophy of endangered wildlife species, namely 6 pieces ivory weighing 6.8 kg, without permit from Kenya Wildlife Service director General.

PROCEEDINGS

#8. August 13th, 2024 (Hearing): The scheduled hearing did not take place.  All relevant persons were present in the court except for the KWS witness. The IO, who was slated to testify, was away on training in Nairobi. The police file also was not in court. 
 
Defence council advised the court that the accused are travelling from afar and requested consideration should the prosecution know prior that that a hearing was not going to take place.
 
The court adjourned with a next hearing date of August 20th, 2024.
 
#7. July 31st, 2024 (Hearing): DNA – Court set another hearing date of August 13th.
 
 
#6.  July 10th, 2024 (Mention): The court set a hearing date of July 31st.
 
 
#5.  June 27th, 2024 (Mention): 
 
 
#4.  May 2nd, 2024 (Mention):  The court has set another mention date of June 27th. The date suggests that all accused are now out on bond but that needs to be confirmed.

#3.  April 23rd, 2024 (Mention):  As of this date, Shadrack Kyalo Muange (A#1) and Danstan Kisyoka Maleli (A#3) are out on bond.  Stephen Mutiso Kitavi (A#2) and Peter Mutunga Kioko (A#4) are still in custody. The 3rd accused advised the court that he has not yet received any documents except for the charge sheet. The court has set a mention date of May 2nd. (First attendance for SEEJ-AFRICA)

Four suspects arrested over possession of ivory worth 2 million shillings

Four suspects arrested over possession of ivory worth 2 million shillings

Four suspects have been arrested over possession of ivory worth an estimated Ksh.2 million shillings.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the ivory was recovered in Makindu, Makueni County.

The four suspects were identified as 34-year-old Stephen Kitavi, 39-year-old Peter Kioko, Shadrack Kyalo Muange, 47; and Danstan Musyoka, 54.

“The suspects were found in possession of six pieces of ivory tusks weighing 6.8 kilograms,” police said.

The multi agency team comprised NPS officers from Makindu Police Station, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and their counterparts from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

 The suspects were detained at Makindu Police Station awaiting arraignment on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.

“The National Police Service takes this opportunity to thank members of the public for their cooperation on this case,” police added.
