#10. August 8th, 2024 (Mention): The court has set the next hearing date for August 29th.

Case Overview

  On January 29th, 2024  at around 1700hrs, Mamba Village area of  Mombasa County, Muthoni Virginia Titus and Naomi Mwende were jointly found dealing in 6 pieces of elephant tusks. They weighed 11.8 kg and were  concealed in a whitish nylon bag. They were arraigned in Shanzu court on January 30th, 2024.

#07. May 20th, 2024 (Hearing): Today’s scheduled hearing did not take place. Court 2 of Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda was not sitting as he was away on official duties. Both accused were present. Prosecution witnesses were not. A new hearing date of June 12th, 2024 was given through the court assistant.

#06. April 29th, 2024 (Hearing): The scheduled hearing did not take place. While both accused were ready to proceed, the two scheduled KWS witnesses were reportedly at another hearing in Mombasa law courts.  The hearing has been adjourned to May 20th, 2024.

#02. February 15th, 2024 (Mention): Both accused were present, the first accused with counsel the second without. The accused persons confirmed they had been served with the witness statements and all other documents the prosecution would rely on during the trial. The matter was marked ready for hearing and a date set for April 29th, 2024.  A mention is scheduled for the second accused, Mwende, for March 15th as she is still in custody.

#1. January 30th, 2024 (Plea): Two women were arraigned in  Shanzu court  before Hon. Leah Nekesa Kisabuli for dealing in Elephant ivory. They pleaded not guilty and were released on 1.5 million bond each, or cash bail of Kes 900,000.00. The case will be mentioned on February 15, 2024
