Four suspects arrested with elephant tusks in Kakuma, Turkana

Four suspects were arrested in Kakuma, Turkana West Sub-County on Tuesday after they were found in possession of elephant tusks they allegedly intended to traffic.
In a joint operation conducted at around 10:00 AM, Kenya Wildlife Service officers working alongside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations apprehended Albert Elia Eroo, 36, Akateso Enock, 45, Losuru Ekadeli Ekutan, 30, and Havyarima Claudia, 46.
Turkana County KWS Warden, Elijah Chege, confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects were found transporting the trophies on a motorbike.
“Two of the suspects are Burundian nationals while the other two are Kenyans from the Turkana community,” Chege said. “They have been booked at Kakuma Police Station and will be arraigned in court tomorrow.”
Chege praised local residents for providing timely information that led to the arrests.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the area residents whose intelligence enabled this arrest. Their vigilance affirms that communities are indispensable partners in conservation. By strengthening this union, we secure our wildlife for posterity,” he said.
The warden described the operation as a major milestone in the fight against wildlife crime in the region, and vowed that KWS will continue working closely with security agencies and the public to curb poaching.
However, Chege has warned those involved in ivory trafficking in Turkana County that they will face the full force of the law. He is also urging members of the public to report anyone dealing in ivory.
“Anyone found trading in ivory will be arrested, prosecuted, and dealt with according to the law,” he said. “I am calling on residents to report to the police anyone found engaging in ivory trade.” Said Mr.Chege.
