SEEJ-AFRICA THUMBNAIL
On March 28th, 2014, Singapore customs seized and verified a container found to be transporting 1004 kg ivory. The shipment, declared as containing coffee beans, originated from Kampala, Uganda, and was trucked to Mombasa Port for the onward voyage.
In late 2015, a joint task force from the NGO ‘Freeland’ and the Lusaka Agreement Task Force (LATF), commenced an investigation relating to two other ivory seizures that had initiated/transited Pointe Noire, Congo in 2014 and early 2015. That investigation led to this investigation and prosecution. Initially, 7 persons were arrested in April/May of 2017. There are now 6 before the court.
